Babylon 5: The Gathering is the pilot movie for the Babylon 5 sci-fi series. It first aired in 1993, a year before the main show began. The story follows an assassination attempt on Kosh, the Vorlon ambassador, while introducing key characters like Commander Jeffrey Sinclair and Security Chief Michael Garibaldi. The movie also gives viewers a look at Babylon 5, a massive space station where different alien species gather.
When first released, the film had a slower pace and a less engaging music score. However, series creator J. Michael Straczynski later improved it with a new special edition, making the story sharper and adding a new soundtrack by composer Christopher Franke.
Following the success of Babylon 5, four additional TV movies were created:
- In the Beginning: A prequel set 10 years before the series, telling the story of the Earth-Minbari War. It reveals key events discussed in the main show, making it more interesting for longtime fans.
- River of Souls: A standalone adventure bringing back the mysterious Soul Hunters from Season One.
- Thirdspace: A thrilling sci-fi story with a Lovecraftian horror theme, taking place after the Shadow War.
- A Call to Arms: The most important of the TV movies, setting up the events for the follow-up series Crusade. It takes place five years after the Shadow War, focusing on an attack on Earth by the Drakh, who unleash a deadly virus.
This movie collection expands the Babylon 5 universe, offering deeper insight into its history, characters, and conflicts while setting the stage for future stories.
