This collection of Hong Kong cinema classics picks up where Volume One left off and features some of the best films from the final years of the Shaw Brothers studio. While the studio's end was near, they didn’t go out quietly. Packed with exciting special features and new restorations, this box set is even bigger and more thrilling than the last one.
The collection starts with the legendary The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, directed by kung fu master Lau Kar-leung. It stars Gordon Liu as a young man who seeks revenge but ends up finding spiritual enlightenment. This film led to two fun sequels, Return to the 36th Chamber and Disciples of the 36th Chamber, both included in this set. Lau Kar-leung also stars in Mad Monkey Kung Fu, a comedy with action, paired with the lesser-known Five Superfighters.
Next, we dive into the Venom Mob’s films, featuring Chang Cheh’s team of action stars in Invincible Shaolin, The Kid with the Golden Arm, Magnificent Ruffians, and Ten Tigers of Kwangtung. The set also includes My Young Auntie, a fun comedy directed by Lau and starring Kara Hui, followed by two wild, action-packed films from the 1980s: Mercenaries from Hong Kong and The Boxer’s Omen.
Lastly, the set features Lau Kar-leung’s final major Shaw film, Martial Arts of Shaolin, starring Jet Li. It’s paired with The Bare-Footed Kid, a tribute to Shaw Brothers’ legacy with Johnnie To as director and Lau as fight choreographer. This collection celebrates the unforgettable impact of Shaw Brothers’ martial arts films.
